Red Tapetm

Hello! I'm Chris Messina, inventor of Red Tape brand adhesive measuring tape and founder of its parent company, Fourth Field, LLC. One of my favorite hobbies has to be woodworking. One day I was trying to cut several very long boards the same length on a miter saw for a book case I’d designed. Cutting them all at once would have been ideal, but the space under the blade did not allow it. This is important because logic implies when we make a cutting line on multiple items and cut to that line, all items will be the same length regardless of whether we cut them all at once or individually, but nothing could be further from the truth. All builders recognize that the materials we build with slip, wobble and get off line in very small amounts as we process them. In woodworking you come to find a new understanding of the words ‘perfect’ and ‘exact’.

As I cut, I found myself marking and slightly readjusting my cutting line for each board. This process left me wishing I had more hands, a larger saw, or some way to have a floating ruler rest against all the boards without obscuring the cutting line underneath. It was at that moment the idea for Red Tape was born. After extensive research about tape, adhesives and printing processes the idea became a living product. Because Red Tape sticks, it is that extra set of hands other tape measures don’t have. It’s my hope that it frees your hands to build great things.
